Groundwork is a group of charities helping people and organisations make changes in order to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects, and to live and work in a greener way.

We know that the important issues are all connected – so our work can’t easily be placed in boxes marked 'environmental issues’, 'regeneration', 'employment' or 'health'. We create projects and services that benefit both people and the wider environment.

A new piece of public artwork has been unveiled in the Chesterfield Borough. The artwork is an elaborate stone tree decorated with various plants and animals that children thought they might find in and around Wickens Park at Mastin Moor.

Nationally-recognised Holmfirth based artist, Michael Disley, was selected by Chesterfield Borough Council in consultation with members of the Staveley Community Forum from a short list identified by Groundwork.

Michael selected a four-tonne piece of grit stone and carved the features identified during workshops held at Norbriggs and Woodthorpe Primary Schools. The children also carved the features onto paving stones that will be laid beside the circular path making a trail in the park.

Cllr Ian Openshaw, the Borough’s Lead Member for Sustainability and Climate Change, said:
“The council’s Percent for Art scheme has given Wickens Park yet another feature of which the local community can be very proud. It will also remind them of the wide range of plants and animals which need to be protected.”

The opening ceremony was performed (on Thursday, May 27) by the Deputy Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Mick Bagshaw. Present were children from both schools and representatives of Staveley Community Forum and Groundwork.
